Armed Forces Memorial, War memorial at National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, England
The Armed Forces Memorial is a remembrance site at the National Memorial Arboretum consisting of two bronze sculptures within a 43-meter diameter stone structure set upon a 6-meter high earth mound. Thousands of names are carved chronologically on Portland stone panels that visitors can search through.
The memorial was dedicated by Queen Elizabeth II in 2007 and honors over 16,000 service members who died on duty since World War II ended. It commemorates operations in Palestine, Korea, Northern Ireland, Afghanistan, and other conflict zones.
The memorial carries the names of fallen service members and creates a place where visitors honor their relatives and remember their sacrifice. People from different generations visit here to pay their respects in quiet contemplation.
The site is easily accessible and visitors will find helpful information and a database to search for family names among those remembered. It is best to allow plenty of time for your visit and to explore the surrounding arboretum grounds.
On November 11th at 11 AM, sunlight passes through a gap in the southern wall to illuminate a bronze wreath at the memorial's center. This annual occurrence creates a deeply moving moment for those present at that time.
