BT Museum, Telecommunications museum in Blackfriars, England
The BT Museum was a collection of telecommunications equipment in London showing the development from early telegraph devices to modern systems. The exhibition presented various telephones, switchboards, and other apparatus used across Britain to trace technological change over many decades.
The museum began in 1982 as the Telecom Technology Showcase inside Baynard House and documented the history of British telecommunications. It remained active until 1997 as a key location for preserving this technological record.
The museum showed how communication tools changed daily life for people across Britain and how telephones and other devices became part of homes and workplaces. The displays revealed the practical ways these technologies shaped how people connected with each other.
The museum was located in Baynard House, a building with BT offices that was centrally placed in London and easy to reach. Visitors needed time to explore the different exhibition areas since the collection covered much material from different time periods.
After closure the physical museum was transformed into the digital archive Connected Earth, which made the collection accessible online. This digital project allowed the telecommunications history to be preserved and continued for a wider audience.
