BT postcode area, Postal code region in Northern Ireland, United Kingdom

The BT postcode area is a postal division covering all of Northern Ireland and containing more than 47,000 individual codes distributed across over 80 districts. This framework organizes mail delivery throughout the region's towns, villages and rural zones.

The coding system was introduced between 1970 and 1974 when Northern Ireland became the final region in the United Kingdom to receive postal codes. The rollout took several years and followed principles already applied in England, Scotland and Wales.

The naming convention for Belfast postcodes follows a systematic pattern, with BT1 marking the commercial center and subsequent numbers arranged clockwise around the city.

Addresses throughout the region follow the format BT followed by digits indicating specific zones, with lower numbers often marking central locations in larger towns. Some locations use a post town name that differs from the nearest larger sorting hub, so the code helps more than the place name for precise orientation.

The region uses more than 80 different postcode districts despite being smaller in area than many other postcode zones across the United Kingdom. This high density allows for finer sorting in areas with complex settlement patterns and numerous small communities.
