Babbacombe

Babbacombe is a coastal suburb perched on limestone cliffs rising above Lyme Bay, with a cliff-top promenade running along the heights. The area emerged as a fashionable seaside resort in the 1800s, attracting visitors drawn to its dramatic clifftop location. The arrival of the cliff railway in 1926 transformed how people accessed the beaches below, opening up a new chapter for tourism in the region.

The Model Village showcases intricate miniature reproductions of British town scenes and landscapes, reflecting how visitors of earlier generations enjoyed entertainment through detailed craftsmanship. This tradition of creating small-scale worlds for public enjoyment remains a defining feature of the place.

The area is best explored on foot, with steep pathways connecting the cliff-top promenade to the beaches and attractions below. Plan to wear sturdy shoes as there are many steps and inclines, and visits during school holidays tend to be crowded with families.

The cliff railway operates using water ballast rather than traditional motors, where a tank beneath one car fills with seawater to pull the descending carriage down while lifting the other. This simple mechanical system has worked reliably for nearly a century and remains largely unchanged.
