Bardwell Windmill, Historic windmill in Bardwell, Suffolk, England.
Bardwell Windmill is a white tower mill that rises above the Suffolk landscape with four sails and a fantail that turns to face the wind. The site includes a Victorian cottage, a retail building currently occupied by a bakery, and covers roughly a third of an acre.
Construction began in 1823 as a working grain mill for the surrounding farming community. A major storm in 1987 caused significant damage, leading to restoration work that continues to preserve the structure today.
The mill shows how wind power was central to rural English life and farming communities. Today it stands as a reminder of this traditional way of working with natural resources.
The site spreads across several buildings that visitors can explore at their own pace during a visit. The bakery located in the retail building operates during regular business hours and offers a glimpse into how the mill works today.
New sails and a fantail were installed between 2010 and 2014, allowing the mill to work again as it did in the past. This kind of detailed restoration work is uncommon and demonstrates the care taken to keep the mill functioning.
