Ashdown House School, Independent boarding school in Forest Row, England
Ashdown House School was a boarding institution in Forest Row, East Sussex, set within a classical building featuring domed roofs and symmetrical columns. The structure holds Grade II* listed status and displays Greek Revival design from the late eighteenth century.
Benjamin Henry Latrobe designed the manor between 1793 and 1795 for John Trayton Fuller, who acquired the land in the same year from the Manor of Lavertye. The school opened its doors in 1843 and closed in 2020 after more than 175 years of operation.
The school promoted education through academic studies, physical activities, and community service projects while maintaining its architectural heritage.
The site sits in a rural area south of East Grinstead, reached by country roads through woodland and open fields. Access is limited as the building is not open to the public and no longer functions as an educational institution.
Architect Latrobe later emigrated to the United States, where he designed the Capitol in Washington and other notable structures. His early work in Forest Row already shows the classical principles he refined across the Atlantic.
