Bat's Castle, Iron Age hillfort in Carhampton, England
Bat's Castle is an Iron Age fortified settlement perched on a hilltop in Carhampton. Two stone ramparts with ditches surround a rectangular enclosed area where the community once lived and worked.
The settlement was built between the Late Bronze Age and Iron Age and remained in use for centuries. Roman coins found at the site show it was still occupied well into the later period of occupation.
The site shows how Iron Age communities designed their settlements for protection and daily life. Walking through it, you can sense how people organized themselves on this hilltop.
You can enter the site through two distinct gateways that remain visible from the fortification period. Both entrances are easy to identify and provide good starting points for exploring the enclosed area.
Schoolboys discovered eight silver coins buried at the site in 1983, spanning nearly 450 years of history. Three of these coins were officially recognized as treasure trove, making it a notable archaeological find.
