Batley Variety Club, Entertainment venue in Batley, United Kingdom
The Batley Variety Club was an entertainment building in Batley with tiered seating levels that provided good sightlines to the stage. The space could hold around 1,750 guests and offered standing areas for additional audience members.
James and Betty Corrigan founded the Batley Variety Club in March 1967 on former industrial land. The place quickly developed into a major destination for live entertainment in the region.
The place attracted international performers and gave them a stage to reach enthusiastic crowds. Guests traveled from across the region to experience quality live entertainment in an intimate setting.
The building served food in baskets during performances to minimize noise and avoid distracting the audience. The bar operated under special service rules during certain acts to keep focus on the stage.
Roy Orbison recorded a live album there on May 9, 1969, which later became an important recording from his career. The BBC also broadcast performances by Gracie Fields from the venue, reaching an even wider audience.
