Bodnant Garden, Arboretum in Conwy, Wales
Bodnant Garden is an arboretum in Conwy County Borough, Wales, covering a hillside site with terraces, woodland paths, and a river valley. The layout divides into an upper section with architectural plantings and a lower area following a natural glen.
The site was developed from 1875 when Henry Pochin purchased the estate and began creating the gardens. Later generations of the McLaren family expanded the collection and transferred ownership to the National Trust in 1949.
Der Name stammt von den walisischen Wörtern „bod„, Residence, and „nant„, stream, referring to the site's position near running water. Visitors walk through areas where plants from Asia, the Americas, and Europe grow side by side, showing how these species adapt to the Welsh climate.
The upper area has mostly paved paths suitable for wheelchairs, while the lower valley includes steeper and unpaved trails. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear, as the ground can be uneven in places.
A laburnum tunnel in the valley forms a canopy of bright yellow flowers in late spring. An old mill beside the river now serves as a display space showing garden tools from earlier periods.
