Bremia, Roman fort archaeological site in Llanddewi Brefi, Wales
Bremia is a Roman fort set on elevated ground near the Sarn Helen road, extending across an area of roughly 130 meters (426 feet). Visible remains include defensive banks and ditches along with foundations of a bathhouse and military structures.
The fort was built around 75 AD and housed approximately 500 soldiers until its abandonment around 120 AD. During this period it served as a key military position controlling the Roman presence in Wales.
Five inscribed stones at the site reveal that soldiers from Asturias in northern Spain were stationed here. This shows how far Roman forces recruited and deployed troops from distant corners of the empire.
The site is protected as a scheduled monument with clear defensive features visible across the grounds. When visiting, be aware that the terrain is uneven and weather conditions can change quickly.
A civilian settlement south of the fort housed around 1,000 people who supported and supplied the garrison. This connection between military and civilian life was common but this settlement was notably expansive for its time.
