Bournemouth School, school in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, UK
Bournemouth School is a grammar school for boys aged 11 to 18 located in Bournemouth, Dorset. The school has modern facilities including a new building completed in 2023 with language classrooms, a canteen called Le Bistro, and a sixth form study center, alongside sports facilities featuring an indoor hall, tennis and netball courts, and football pitches.
The school was founded in 1901 by E. Fenwick as a grammar school with over 50 boys in Victorian buildings on Porchester Road. During World War II, it relocated to East Way in 1939 and temporarily housed around 800 French soldiers who had escaped from Dunkirk.
The school is organized into six houses named after notable figures such as Darwin and Newton, fostering teamwork and leadership among students through year-round competitions. This tradition creates a sense of community and identity within the broader student body.
The location on East Way provides good access to the site and nearby sports fields, including the Sir David English Sports Centre with indoor halls, grass pitches, and training areas. The campus combines active learning spaces with outdoor areas for activities and recreation between lessons.
The school started admitting female students to its sixth form in September 2012, and girls now represent about one-third of the upper sixth population. This shift demonstrates how the institution has adapted to modern expectations while maintaining its core character.
