Bute Building, Grade II listed university building in Cathays Park, Cardiff, United Kingdom
The Bute Building is a Grade II listed university building located on Cardiff University's campus in Cathays Park. It features six Roman Doric columns at its entrance and currently serves as an academic center for several departments.
The building was constructed in 1916 following a design competition won by architects Percy Thomas and Ivor Jones. It originally functioned as Cardiff Technical College before becoming part of the university.
The building houses the Welsh School of Architecture and the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies, serving as a hub for creative and media education. These programs give the space its distinctive academic character and draw students interested in design and communication fields.
The building houses two specialized libraries: the Bute Library and the Architecture Library, offering resources for students and faculty. Visitors will find extensive collections focused on architecture and related academic fields.
The basement contains an artificial sky dome measuring 8 meters in diameter, the largest of its kind in the United Kingdom. This dome is used for daylight modeling research and represents a rare facility for architectural training and study.
