Butterfly World, Butterfly exhibition center in Chiswell Green, England
Butterfly World was a visitor center in Chiswell Green dedicated to butterfly education and conservation, featuring a tunnel where guests could walk among live specimens, a breeding facility, and research areas. The grounds included twenty acres of wildflower meadows that served as habitat for the insects on display.
The center opened in 2009 following an initiative by lepidopterist Clive Farrell, with backing from naturalist Sir David Attenborough. It was created to introduce visitors to butterfly biology and the importance of protecting their habitats.
The center provided educational programs for school groups, focusing on butterfly life cycles, native species preservation, and insect research opportunities.
The site was located near St. Albans with convenient access from the M25 motorway, making it easy to reach by car. Visitors could explore the grounds freely, walking through both indoor exhibits and the surrounding meadows at their own pace.
The grounds featured an unusual architectural design that resembled a giant butterfly head when viewed from above. This striking layout made the center a memorable sight for those arriving by aircraft or viewing it from aerial photographs.
