Brookwood American Cemetery and Memorial, Military cemetery in Brookwood, England
Brookwood American Cemetery is an American military burial ground in England with four symmetrical plots arranged around a central flagpole, where white marble headstones rest beneath evergreen trees. The 4.5 acre site was established as a memorial for those who died during the First World War.
The burial ground was established in 1918 and holds 468 American military graves from the First World War, including 41 unidentified soldiers who died in England or nearby waters. It remains the only American World War I cemetery located within the British Isles.
The chapel at the center displays the names of 563 fallen soldiers on its walls, while colored glass windows with military and religious motifs fill the space with light. The location conveys the soldiers' stories through its simple, reflective design.
The grounds are open to visitors daily, and staff members are available to provide information and assist in locating specific graves. It is worthwhile to allow time to explore the site at a relaxed pace and visit the memorial chapel.
The site was specifically designed as a burial ground for American soldiers who died in Europe or en route during the First World War. Its location roughly 45 kilometers southwest of London makes it an important place for families to honor their deceased relatives.
