Cambridge University Council, Executive body at University of Cambridge, United Kingdom
The Cambridge University Council is the principal governing body of the University of Cambridge in England, responsible for policy decisions and the overall management of the university. It brings together college heads, academics, student representatives, and independent members who meet in the Council Room of the Old Schools building in the center of Cambridge.
The Council has existed in various forms since the university's medieval origins and gradually took on broader governing powers over the centuries. In 2005 external members joined for the first time, changing its composition, and this new structure was formally confirmed by royal approval in 2008.
The Council meets in the Old Schools building, one of the oldest administrative buildings at the university, located in the heart of historic Cambridge. People walk past it daily without realizing it houses the room where the university's main governing decisions are made.
The Old Schools building where the Council meets is located in the center of Cambridge and easy to reach on foot from most colleges. Since this is an active administrative body, public access to its meetings or to the Council Room itself is not generally available.
The Council acts legally as a charity trustee, which means its members are both directors of the university and responsible for protecting its charitable status under English law. This gives them a layer of personal legal responsibility that goes beyond a typical board of directors.
