Camden Art Centre, Arts centre and Grade II listed building in Camden, United Kingdom
Camden Art Centre occupies a former Victorian library building and presents contemporary art exhibitions across multiple gallery spaces alongside a garden terrace. The spaces are distributed throughout the historic building, creating varied environments for displaying artworks.
The building was designed by architect Arnold Taylor and opened as Hampstead Central Library in 1897. It was transformed into an arts centre in 1965 and has shaped the neighbourhood's cultural life since then.
The centre hosts exhibitions of work by artists from around the world and runs programs where creators spend time developing their practice on-site. These activities shape it into a gathering place where visitors can engage with art-making in action.
The centre has a café serving refreshments and a specialist art bookshop, both easily reached from Finchley Road underground station. The various spaces are well marked, and there is plenty of room for walking through and exploring.
The building underwent renovation in 2004 by Tony Fretton Architects, who integrated modern facilities while keeping the Victorian architecture intact. This blend of old and new remains visually striking throughout the centre.
