Castell Arnallt, Medieval castle ruins in Llanover, United Kingdom
Castell Arnallt is a medieval stronghold that survives today as a large earthen mound with sharply sloped sides. The site shows evidence of more sophisticated structures beneath the surface, indicating it was once more elaborate than a simple defensive mound.
The stronghold was built and occupied by Seisyll ap Dyfnwal, a ruler of Gwent, who used it as his defended residence. It fell into decline following major political upheaval in the region during the late 1100s.
The stronghold represents an important example of how Welsh rulers displayed their power through fortified homes in the medieval period. The mound remains a visible symbol of local authority and regional importance from centuries past.
The site sits on private farmland used for grazing, so access is restricted and requires advance permission from the landowners. It is best to check locally for current access conditions and the most practical approach to visiting.
Surveys of the mound have uncovered hidden stone foundations beneath the earth, revealing that the site once contained solid structures rather than being just a simple earthwork. These discoveries suggest there is more to uncover about what once stood here.
