Central Area Transmission System, Gas terminal and transmission system in Seal Sands, Middlesbrough, United Kingdom.
The Central Area Transmission System is a gas terminal and transportation facility at Seal Sands, near Middlesbrough in northeast England. It consists of a network of pipelines, storage tanks, and treatment units that receive, process, and move natural gas from the North Sea.
Construction began in the early 1990s, and when it was completed, it ranked among the largest industrial projects ever undertaken in Great Britain. Over the following years, the facility was extended with new connections and additional processing capacity to keep up with demand.
The site is a visible part of Teesside's industrial identity, a region that has relied on heavy industry for generations. Driving along the coast, visitors can see the pipes and towers as a fixed feature of the local landscape.
The facility sits in an industrial zone at Seal Sands and is easiest to reach by car, as public transport options in the area are limited. Visiting during the day gives the clearest view of the installation from the public road nearby.
The terminal is linked to offshore gas fields through a central riser platform sitting in the middle of the North Sea, far out of sight from the shore. That platform gathers gas from several underwater sources before sending it through a single pipeline to Seal Sands.
