Chichester Festival Theatre, Theatre company and charitable organization in Chichester, England.
Chichester Festival Theatre is a performing arts venue in Chichester, England, with two separate spaces for productions. The larger auditorium seats over 1,200 visitors, while the smaller Minerva space accommodates around 280 guests.
Architect Philip Powell designed the building in the early 1960s using a modern post-war style. Laurence Olivier led the house during its first years, bringing many well-known actors to West Sussex.
The main stage follows an open-thrust design where the audience sits on three sides around the performance area, bringing viewers close to the actors. This arrangement creates a direct connection between performers and visitors throughout each show.
Visitors can book performances in advance through the website or purchase tickets in person at the box office, which opens before show times. Backstage tours run on selected days and show the workshops and dressing rooms used by performers.
The Minerva stage was added later as a second space and takes its name from the Roman goddess of wisdom and craft. Many successful productions started here on a smaller scale before moving to the main stage or transferring to London.
