Bywell Castle, Grade I listed castle in Bywell, England

The castle features a three-story gatehouse and sections of curtain wall integrated into a later residential structure near the River Tyne.

The Neville family constructed the fortification in 1430, and King Henry VI sought refuge within its walls after the Battle of Hexham in 1464.

The castle represents Norman military architecture with later modifications, displaying building techniques from both the 14th and 15th centuries.

Located on the B6309 road, three miles west of Prudhoe, the castle remains private property with limited exterior viewing from the adjacent churchyard.

The castle shares its name with a nineteenth-century cargo ship that sank in the River Thames in 1878, causing over 600 casualties.
