Cavendish Square, Garden square in City of Westminster, United Kingdom.
Cavendish Square is a small garden square in the City of Westminster, surrounded by office buildings and medical practices near Harley Street. Circular paths lead through the interior between lawns and tall plane trees, while a low hedge separates it all from the pavement.
Edward Harley, second Earl of Oxford, laid out the square from 1717 onward as he developed the Marylebone area for his wife Henrietta. During the Second World War a bomb damaged part of the surrounding buildings, which were later rebuilt.
The space takes its name from Henrietta Cavendish Holles, for whom it was originally created, and now sits quietly between office buildings in west central London. During lunch hours, workers from the surrounding buildings use the benches beneath the trees for their breaks.
The gate opens at eight in the morning and closes in the afternoon or evening depending on the season, with exact times shifting between summer and winter. All paths inside are level and wheelchair accessible, with benches placed along the routes.
Until 1868 an equestrian statue of William Duke of Cumberland, who won the Battle of Culloden in 1746, stood in the center. After repeated vandalism it was removed and sent to be melted down.
