Chelsea Barracks, Former military barracks in City of Westminster, England
Chelsea Barracks is a military complex spanning five acres between Belgravia, Chelsea, and Pimlico. The site combines restored Georgian-style buildings with modern residential units and community facilities.
The complex was built in 1862 to house two infantry battalions and served as an active military installation for over a century. Troops relocated to Woolwich in 2008, after which the site underwent redevelopment.
The Garrison Chapel preserves military memorial panels and religious artworks depicting biblical figures. These elements create a space where visitors can reflect on the site's military heritage today.
The redeveloped site is now open to the public with shops, medical facilities, and community spaces throughout. Visitors can walk through the complex and access various areas at their own pace.
In 1981, the site was targeted by an IRA nail-bomb attack that killed two civilians. This tragic event is part of the location's history and remains part of its memory.
