Clare Castle, Medieval fortress ruins in Clare, England
Clare Castle is a medieval fortress between River Stour and Chilton Stream in Suffolk, England. The mound foundation rises significantly above the surrounding land and dominates the layout of the site.
A descendant of William the Conqueror built this castle after 1066 as the center of his authority. It was later expanded and modified under different families before eventually falling into decline.
The de Clare family shaped this place for centuries, turning it into a center of regional power and local life. You can still see how the space reflects this long period of importance.
The site is now a public park with free access to explore the medieval ruins and grounds. The terrain can be steep and uneven, so wear suitable shoes and take care when walking around.
In the 1800s, a railway line cut directly through the castle and split the inner area from the rest of the grounds. This unusual scar from industry remains visible today and marks the many different periods this place has lived through.
