Cherry Tree Wood, Public park in East Finchley, United Kingdom.
Cherry Tree Wood is a wooded park in East Finchley, London Borough of Barnet, shaped by old hornbeam trees that give it a forest-like feel. It also has tennis courts, a basketball court, and play areas for different ages.
The land was once part of medieval Finchley Wood, used as hunting grounds by the Bishops of London in the 1300s. It was eventually opened to the public as a park for local residents.
The name reflects the cherry trees that once shaped this landscape. Today visitors can see how the woodland design maintains a connection to those natural origins through its varied planting and open spaces.
The park is right across from East Finchley Underground station on the Northern Line, so it is easy to reach by tube. It opens at dawn and closes at dusk, which fits well into a morning or afternoon visit.
The park was once known as 'Dirthouse Wood' because street waste and horse manure from London were brought here to fertilize hay meadows. Nothing of that past remains visible on the ground today.
