St Andrew's Church, Chew Magna, Medieval church in Chew Magna, England
St Andrew's Church is a medieval building in Chew Magna featuring a tall sandstone tower with decorative pinnacles in Norman style. Inside, colored stained glass windows and an ornate wooden rood screen span the full width of the chancel area.
This church was founded around 1150 and received its impressive tower approximately 1440. Major restoration work during the 1800s shaped the building into its present form.
The church houses wooden memorials for local residents lost in both World Wars, creating quiet spaces of remembrance throughout the building. These tributes show how the village continues to honor those from its community.
The building sits on South Parade in Chew Magna village and is easy to find and access from the town center. Keep in mind that services take place regularly, so you may find areas temporarily closed during worship or special events.
The tower holds eight bells, including two original Bilbie bells cast in 1735 that remain in use today. A clock mechanism from 1903 automatically plays different hymns throughout the day and marks each hour.
