Corporation Bridge, Grade II listed bascule bridge in Grimsby, England
Corporation Bridge is a steel bascule bridge that crosses Alexandra Dock in Grimsby and can be lifted to allow boats to enter and exit the harbor. The structure sits at a key point between the docks and the town's main shopping and business district.
This structure was built in 1925 to replace an earlier swing bridge dating from 1872. The opening ceremony in 1928 was conducted by Prince Edward VIII.
The bridge connects Grimsby's working docks with the town center, and locals still use it daily as a vital route through the harbor area.
This is an active pedestrian and vehicle crossing, and you should be prepared for occasional closures when the deck lifts for boat traffic. Visiting during daylight hours lets you see the harbor activity and understand the bridge's working purpose.
The bridge uses a rare Scherzer rolling lift mechanism, an older mechanical system that raises the deck when vessels request entry to the dock. Few bridges of this design remain working anywhere in Britain today.
