Corporation Island, River island in Richmond, United Kingdom
Corporation Island sits between Richmond Bridge and Richmond Railway Bridge on the River Thames, featuring dense woodland of white willow and poplar trees. The thickly wooded river stretch here provides habitat for various bird species and supports the ecological life of this section of the river.
The island was named after the Corporation of Richmond, a local administrative body that eventually merged into the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. Its shape shifted noticeably after the construction of the New London Bridge in 1829 altered the river's tidal flows.
The island maintains a grey heron colony with numerous nests, contributing to the natural diversity of the River Thames ecosystem.
The island is closed to the public, but you can view it from the nearby banks and bridges. Best observation points are from Richmond Bridge or the riverbank paths in the surrounding area.
Grey herons nest here in large numbers, making the island a breeding site for these wading birds. The dense trees provide shelter and protection that allows the colony to thrive alongside river traffic.
