Croft Castle, Medieval castle in Croft and Yarpole, England
Description
Croft Castle is a stone fortress with round corner towers and a central courtyard, built with typical medieval features including stone walls and mullioned windows. The building shows construction from different periods, as it was modified and expanded over many centuries.
History
The castle was built and owned by the Croft family starting in 1085, then passed through many hands before the family repurchased it in the early 1900s. They eventually gave it to the National Trust in 1957, ensuring its preservation for future visitors.
Culture
The Croft family shaped this place for nearly nine centuries, and their story is visible in the family portraits and furnishings throughout the rooms. You can sense how daily life unfolded here across generations, from the dining room to the chambers upstairs.
Practical
The ground floor has ramp access for visitors with limited mobility, and online tours allow you to explore from home if needed. Plan to spend enough time to see both the castle rooms and the grounds without rushing through.
Did you know?
Ancient Sweet Chestnut trees grow here, planted several centuries ago and still shading parts of the grounds today. These old trees, combined with the nearby Fishpool Valley, offer a natural backdrop that many visitors discover only when they stroll beyond the main building.
