Daimler Car Hire Garage, Art Deco garage in Bloomsbury, England
Daimler Car Hire Garage is a four-story building with green metal-framed windows arranged in horizontal bands and a white facade decorated with ceramic tiles around the entrances. The interior features a central spiral ramp descending to an underground car park.
The garage was built in 1931 by architects Wallis Gilbert and Partners and originally served as headquarters for the Daimler Hire Car Company. It later operated as a taxi depot before undergoing major renovation in recent decades.
The building shows how London's commercial architecture embraced modern style in the 1930s. Its clean lines and shiny tiles reflect a time when craftsmanship and industrial design came together.
The building is located on Herbrand Street near Russell Square Underground station and is well served by public transport. Its facade is clearly visible from the street and can be easily viewed.
The basement was cleverly designed with a spiral ramp that allows vehicles to descend and ascend on a continuous curve without needing sharp turns. This system was an innovative solution for small urban parking spaces at that time.
