Drapers' Gardens, Modern skyscraper in City of London, United Kingdom.
Drapers' Gardens is a modern office tower in the City of London, standing at the corner of Throgmorton Avenue and Copthall Avenue. It rises across 30 floors and includes rooftop terraces as well as a small street-level park open to the public.
The previous building on this site was designed by Richard Seifert in 1967 and became the tallest structure ever demolished in the United Kingdom when it came down in 2007. The current tower was completed in 2009, taking its place on land that has belonged to the Drapers' Company since the 16th century.
The site belongs to the Drapers' Company, which has maintained a connection to this location since 1544 when it served as a market garden. The pocket park and terraces today reflect this heritage of providing green space for the community.
The tower sits in the heart of the financial district and is easy to reach on foot from several nearby stations. The small park at its base is open to anyone passing through and offers a spot to pause during a walk through the area.
During construction of the current tower, archaeologists found Roman objects dating from the 1st to the 5th century, showing that people have used this patch of ground for a very long time. Before any building stood here, the Drapers' Company used the land as a market garden in the 16th century.
