Dùn an Achaidh

Dùn an Achaidh is an ancient fortification on the island of Coll built atop a rocky ridge. The remains show thick defensive walls that once enclosed the entire structure to protect those within.

The fortification dates to the early settlement period and is connected to the island's Scandinavian history. Excavations uncovered pottery and other objects that shed light on daily life at the site.

Local traditions connect the fortification to Norse history, attributing its construction to the son of Olaf, a king of Norway during ancient times.

The site sits on elevated ground across the island and is best reached on foot. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since the terrain is uneven and can be damp.

A notable gap at the northeast wall serves as the entrance to the fortification. This opening led to an inner defensive barrier that provided extra protection for those inside.
