Duddon Old Hall, Historical country house in Duddon and Burton, England
Duddon Old Hall is a country house with timber frame construction set on a stone foundation, displaying decorative elements such as studding and lozenges across two stories. The roof combines local stone slate and Welsh slate, while a distinctive projecting bay features black-and-white decoration.
The Done family owned this residence in the 16th century, establishing it as a country dwelling of that period. Extensive modifications and restorations took place between 1903 and 1904, when the timber frame structure was repaired.
The main room in the cross wing displays an open timber roof, showing how people in medieval times designed their living spaces with practical ceiling structures. This approach to construction was common among country dwellings during that era.
The building underwent recent maintenance work between September 2021 and April 2022, with focus on protecting the timber frame structure. Visitors should note that conservation efforts have improved the overall condition and used modern preservation techniques.
The roof uses an uncommon combination of local stone slate and Welsh slate, a choice reflecting trade connections and material availability of its era. This mixed roof covering is a feature rarely seen on similar houses in the region today.
