Dudley Castle, Medieval castle in Dudley, England
Dudley Castle is a castle ruin on a limestone hill featuring a Norman motte, a keep from the thirteenth century, and Tudor-era residential buildings. The remains show different building phases and how the fortress changed over several hundred years.
Ansculf de Picquigny built the first wooden fortification in 1070, which was later rebuilt in stone during the twelfth century. This transformation made the castle a stronger military stronghold in the region.
The castle grounds host historical reenactments, falconry displays, and educational programs that show how people lived in medieval times. These events help visitors experience what daily life was like for residents back then.
Access to the castle ruins is through the Dudley Zoo entrance, with regular bus services stopping nearby. It is wise to wear sturdy footwear since the hill is steep and paths can be uneven.
The Sharington Range, built in 1540, shows one of the earliest examples of Italian Renaissance architecture in central England. This is remarkable because Italian styles were still rare in this region at that time.
