Fitzalan Chapel, Medieval chapel at Arundel Castle, England
Fitzalan Chapel is a Gothic structure within Arundel Castle featuring pointed arches, carved stonework, and detailed monuments that display medieval craftsmanship techniques. The space is separated from the adjacent St. Nicholas Church by a glass partition and functions for both purposes at once.
Richard FitzAlan, the 3rd Earl of Arundel, commissioned the chapel's construction in 1380 as part of his final wishes. The building has remained in place since then, serving for centuries as a resting place for family members.
The chapel served for centuries as a burial place for the FitzAlan and Howard families, reflecting how important this location was to them across generations. The space shows how these families maintained their connection to St. Nicholas Church through this private sanctuary within the larger building.
The chapel is open to visitors from April through September, Tuesday to Sunday, between 10 AM and 5 PM, and sits within the castle grounds. Entry is included with your Arundel Castle ticket, so plan to visit as part of exploring the full site.
The chapel contains forty-eight original misericords, carved wooden seats that were common features of medieval church pews. These fine handcrafted details survive intact, offering a rare window into everyday medieval practices and craftsmanship.
