Flete House, Grade I listed country house in Holbeton, England

Flete House is a stone country mansion that combines Tudor design with Gothic features and later Victorian additions, including crenellations and expansive windows. The structure overlooks the surrounding landscape with views toward Dartmoor and has been adapted into residential apartments.

The estate traces its roots to Saxon times, with the Damarell family controlling it from 1066 onward through the medieval period. Later centuries brought architectural transformations that reshaped its appearance significantly.

The building shows how different eras added their touch to the structure, with each addition visible in the stonework and design details. Walking around it, you notice how later modifications blend with earlier work, telling the story of changing tastes over centuries.

The building is now private residential apartments and not open for regular visits. You can appreciate its architecture and stone details from the perimeter, where public access allows good views of the exterior.

During World War II, the house served as a maternity facility for Plymouth residents seeking safer shelter. The building thus provided medical care during wartime, leaving behind a lesser-known chapter in its timeline.
