Gibraltar Islands

Gibraltar Islands, River islands in Cookham Dean, England

Gibraltar Islands are two connected river islands in the Thames above Bourne End Railway Bridge near Cookham Dean. The islands divide the waterway into separate channels and create a natural patchwork of land surrounded by flowing water.

The islands developed from smaller aits where osier cultivation supported local basket-making industries centuries ago. This heritage shaped the region along the Thames for generations.

The islands face Quarry Wood, a location that influenced Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows and Jerome K. Jerome's literary works.

A footbridge connects the two islands and allows easy foot access between them. Boaters and walkers can explore the surrounding riverside paths and waters.

Several homes are built on the islands themselves, creating an unusual living situation where residents are surrounded by water on all sides. This rare residential setup makes the islands a surprising inhabited space in the middle of the river.
