Glasgow City Chambers, Town hall on George Square, Glasgow, Scotland
Glasgow City Chambers is a Victorian town hall on George Square in Glasgow, Scotland. The facade displays elaborate stonework with towers and arches, while inside, broad marble staircases lead through several floors.
Queen Victoria opened the town hall in 1888 after six years of construction under William Young. The structure replaced an older building and became the seat of municipal government.
The Banqueting Hall displays murals by Glasgow Boys artists showing scenes from the city's past. Venetian glass windows run along the 33-meter hall, casting colored light across the floor.
Free guided tours run twice daily at 10:30 AM and 2:30 PM from Monday to Friday. The entrance faces George Square, and visitors should wear comfortable shoes for walking through multiple levels.
The entrance hall mosaic of the city coat of arms was made from Italian glass and set into marble from ten countries. The ceiling above displays gilded details that glow when light enters at certain angles.
