Grange Redoubt, Military redoubt in Medway, England
Grange Redoubt is a military fortification in Medway featuring a D-shaped design with concrete casemates arranged for defense. The structure sits beneath earthwork mounds and retains sections of its original steel palisade barrier.
This fortification was built in 1885 as part of a defensive line protecting Chatham Dockyard from potential land attacks from the east. Its construction reflected late 19th-century military strategy for safeguarding naval installations.
Engineers developed the Twydall Profile defense technique at this site, incorporating steep walls and unclimbable barriers in the ditch system.
Access is limited since the site now functions as private stables, though the remaining earthworks are visible from the surrounding area. You can view the front fortifications and steel palisade sections from outside the property.
The construction deliberately avoided using machinery, relying instead on local workers and materials to recreate wartime conditions. This approach allowed engineers to test building methods under realistic constraints.
