Grass Wood, Wharfedale, Nature reserve in Wharfedale, Yorkshire Dales National Park, England

Grass Wood is an 88-hectare ancient woodland growing on limestone slopes and featuring diverse plant species across rocky outcrops and limestone pavement formations. The reserve extends across uneven terrain with multiple access points and a network of walking paths throughout.

The reserve was acquired by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust in 1983, marking a shift from commercial forestry to conservation management. This decision rescued the woodland from further commercial use and allowed it to recover toward a more natural state.

The woodland shows traditional British forest management, where native trees like ash and oak shape the hillsides and create a closed forest ecosystem. Visitors can observe how this balance maintains the natural character of the place.

Access is available through five entrance points along Grass Wood Lane, with parking at a small lot near a former quarry site. The paths are laid out on uneven terrain and can be slippery when wet, so proper footwear is essential.

The reserve holds the last natural population of Lady's Slipper Orchid in Britain, making it essential habitat for this rare plant. Specialists carefully monitor and protect this orchid because it has become so scarce in the wild.
