Greenwich Pier, pier in Greater London
Greenwich Pier is a passenger terminal and working dock on the south bank of the River Thames in Greenwich. The pier has a simple, functional structure with ramps for step-free access and sits directly next to the historic ship Cutty Sark.
The pier was built around 1836 for paddle steamers that carried people along the Thames. Today it operates as part of the modern Uber Boat by Thames Clippers service, connecting Greenwich with central London.
The name Greenwich comes from Old English meaning "green harbor". Around the pier today you see a daily mix of commuters and visitors moving between modern boats and historic ships nearby.
The pier is about 6 minutes on foot from the Cutty Sark DLR station and offers step-free ramps for wheelchairs and strollers. Tickets can be bought at the pier using contactless cards, Oyster cards, or cash, and boats run from early morning to late night on most days.
Many boats travel further up the river to Tower Bridge, where you see London's most famous landmarks from the water. This perspective from the boat shows the city in a way that is not possible from land.
