Hatch Park

Hatch Park is a nature reserve spanning acid grasslands, ancient pollard woodlands, and multiple ponds surrounded by marsh areas. The protected landscape includes designated footpaths that allow visitors to explore while keeping sensitive ecological zones undisturbed.

The deer park received its enclosure grant from King James I in 1618, marking its formal establishment as a managed landscape. The Knatchbull family has owned and maintained the land since 1486, shaping its character across several centuries.

A resident deer herd roams the grasslands, where their natural grazing helps maintain the landscape and its ecological balance. This long-standing relationship between animals and plants shapes how the place looks and functions today.

Access to the reserve comes through designated footpaths that protect sensitive ecological areas while allowing visitors to explore. The terrain varies naturally, so wear appropriate footwear and be prepared for changing ground conditions.

The woodland sections hold the largest concentration of epiphytic lichens found in Kent, drawing botanical researchers to the site. This unusual feature makes the place valuable for scientists studying rare plant growth patterns.
