Jireh Chapel, Protestant church in Haywards Heath, England
Jireh Chapel is a Protestant church built with timber frame construction, with Welsh slate, weather tiles, and Sussex mathematical tiles covering different sides of the structure. The interior preserves a plain layout centered on preaching, featuring original box and family pews throughout, including the Grand Pew positioned beneath the pulpit.
The chapel was built in 1805 for Reverend Jenkin Jenkins and underwent major expansion in 1827 with the addition of a porch and eastern gallery. This expansion reflected the growing number of worshippers and the community's need for more seating.
The interior follows a plain design focused on Protestant worship, where the pulpit takes center stage and family pews fill the space. This layout shaped how worshippers gathered and experienced a faith centered on preaching and simplicity.
The chapel is best experienced during times when the building is open to visitors, allowing you to walk through and observe both the architecture and interior layout clearly. The interior is easily navigable, with good sightlines throughout the space to view the original features and pews.
William Huntington SS, a significant preacher during the Evangelical Awakening, is buried in the chapel yard and visited frequently during his preaching tours. His connection to this place links it to an important period of religious revival in the early 1800s.
