Hungerford Almshouses, Grade I listed almshouse in Corsham, England
Hungerford Almshouses is a row of six residential houses arranged in an L-shaped layout. Gabled roofs and decorated mullioned windows along the north-east side create the main visual character.
Lady Margaret Hungerford founded this complex in 1668 to provide housing for women facing hardship. The establishment was part of a broader effort that also included schooling for local children.
The buildings show how wealthy people in England created homes for women in need. Visitors can see the original architecture that still reflects this commitment to helping others.
Check opening times before visiting, as the site is not always open to the public. A visit allows you to explore both the main houses and the smaller chapel building.
Beyond the residential units, the west side contains a warden's house, schoolroom, and chapel with notable Baroque carving. The carved family arms above the entrance reveal how much thought went into decorating this charitable space.
