Kingston Bridge, Road bridge in Glasgow, United Kingdom
Kingston Bridge is a road bridge spanning the River Clyde in Glasgow with ten lanes of traffic across the water. The structure consists of two spans built from prestressed concrete box girders that support the M8 motorway.
The bridge opened in 1970 as part of Glasgow's inner ring road scheme to improve city connections. Its completion marked the end of a construction effort that started in 1967.
The structure received Category C listing status from Historic Environment Scotland in 2020, recognizing its role in Glasgow's architectural development.
The bridge carries heavy daily traffic and serves as a major crossing for commuters and through travelers. Note that it is an active highway and pedestrian access is not permitted.
During renovations, engineers performed a lifting operation using 128 hydraulic jacks to elevate and stabilize the entire structure. This maneuver ranked among the largest bridge lifts ever executed at the time.
