Knook Castle, Iron Age hillfort near Knook village, Wiltshire, England.
Knook Castle is an Iron Age hillfort situated on elevated ground in Wiltshire. The site features a rectangular earthwork with a single entrance on the south-east side covering roughly two acres.
Settlement began during the Iron Age and continued through the Roman period. Archaeological work revealed that people occupied the location from the 2nd to the 4th century.
The site served as a focal point for settlement and trade routes across many centuries. People chose this elevated location to build and protect their communities.
You can reach the site by following footpaths around the Imber Range, with parking available at the south edge. The elevated location makes it easy to walk the perimeter and see the earthwork clearly.
Beneath the earthwork, traces of what may have been a small Roman amphitheater-like structure emerged during excavation. Findings of painted wall plaster and decorative stone flooring suggest that Roman inhabitants invested in refined living spaces.
