Lanark Hydro Electric Scheme, Hydroelectric power facility at Falls of Clyde, Scotland
The Lanark Hydro Electric Scheme is a hydroelectric facility at the Falls of Clyde with two power stations, Bonnington and Stonebyres, positioned upstream along the river. Both plants feature distinctive white concrete structures integrated into the river landscape.
The facility was established in 1927 and became the first large-scale hydroelectric project in the United Kingdom designed for public electricity supply. This marked the start of modern river-based power generation across Britain.
The listed power stations reflect Scotland's industrial past through their classical architectural style and sturdy concrete construction. Visitors can experience how energy production and the natural landscape coexist along the river's banks.
The site is accessible throughout the year and the falls can be viewed from several vantage points along the riverbank. Visitors get the clearest view of the natural water flow during the few days when the stations cease operations.
For about five days between April and October, the Bonnington station shuts down, allowing the Clyde falls to flow unobstructed at full force. This rare window lets visitors witness the raw power of the river in its natural state.
