Lower Mill, Smock mill in Woodchurch, England
The Lower Mill rises from a brick base with a wooden frame structure featuring four patent sails mounted on a cast-iron windshaft.
Built in 1820, the mill operated continuously until 1926, when technological advances in grain processing methods led to its closure.
Local villagers demonstrated their commitment to preservation in 1957 by raising funds to install new sails for the historic structure.
Visitors can explore this Grade II* listed building through guided tours that explain traditional milling techniques and mechanical systems.
The mill incorporates an eight-blade fantail system that automatically adjusts the cap position to capture optimal wind power for grinding grain.
