Lumford Mill, Historic cotton mill in Hassop, England.
Lumford Mill is a stone structure from the late 18th century standing beside the River Wye with large windows and industrial architecture. The building has been restored and now houses various small businesses within its historic spaces.
Richard Arkwright founded the mill in 1777 and developed it into a major cotton manufacturing site. The factory employed around 350 workers at its peak and was central to the area's industrialization.
The mill shows how water power and machines transformed rural life and drew workers to the area. Visitors can see today how a small community became tied to industrial production.
The site is now a business park and can be viewed from the outside, with its architecture clearly visible. Access to the river and surroundings is straightforward, and visitors can observe the structure from the riverbank.
The mill went through several changes in its power system, starting with a simple undershot wheel and later upgrading to more powerful wheels and water turbines. These mechanical improvements show how the factory adapted to new manufacturing methods.
