Membury Camp

Membury Camp is an Iron Age hillfort situated on a high plateau near Lambourn and Ramsbury. The circular earthwork spreads across the land with visible defensive banks, surrounded by woodland and open fields that define its boundaries.

The fort was built during the Iron Age as a defensive stronghold. Archaeological finds from multiple periods, including Mesolithic artifacts and Iron Age pottery, came to light through excavations conducted in the 1970s and 1980s.

The ancient monument demonstrates the military engineering capabilities of Iron Age communities through its strategic placement and construction methods.

The site can be reached via the Wayfarers Walk, a popular path that passes through the enclosure. Wear sturdy footwear since the ground is uneven and can become slippery in wet conditions.

A county boundary once divided the fort between Berkshire and Wiltshire, with the eastern portion later altered when RAF Membury was built during World War Two. This wartime airfield left its mark on the ancient landscape, creating an unexpected overlap of military history from different eras.
