Lord's Media Centre, Media center building at Lord's Cricket Ground, London, England
The Lord's Media Centre is a white aluminum building at the Lord's Cricket Ground that rises 15 meters above ground and features a glass facade designed to reduce glare. The structure houses two concrete stair towers, a lift, hospitality boxes, a restaurant, and specialized areas for photographers and broadcasting equipment.
The Media Centre opened in 1999 and won the RIBA Stirling Prize for its innovative aluminum semi-monocoque construction methods. The design combined British shipbuilding techniques with Dutch engineering to create a pioneering structure in architectural history.
The building serves as the working headquarters for journalists covering international cricket matches, with its staggered layout allowing reporters to observe the field while remaining connected to other media professionals.
Access to the building is gained via the stair towers or lift depending on your destination within the structure. The venue is most easily visited during cricket events when the ground is open and guided tours are available.
The structure was developed using techniques from shipbuilding, making it the first building of its type constructed this way in the world. This uncommon application of maritime engineering methods to architecture remains remarkable even today.
